HI! I am a new knitter but an expereinced crocheter. As I knit, I find the yarn is too tight to easily get the other needle in where it needs to go. I have to force the needle in. The yarn is free to move into the work, not caught on anything or heald too tightly that i know of. What is going on? I tried using larger needles than is reccomended on the yarn, but still I have this problem. I am using bamboo needles. Would it be better with steel?
You may be twisting the stitches as you knit in each row to the point that they have little space left for you to work in. Think of your stitches as an upside down U with two legs and a crown. Always work into the leg of the stitch on the front of the needle as it faces you, not in the back leg, although there are instructions where you need to knit into the back, you just aren't at that point yet. Also if you are an experienced crocheter and are now holding the yarn in your right hand and throwing it around the needle English Style because that's what your instructions say, try holding it in your left hand as you do to crochet. This allows you to pick the yarn up Continental style. Often novice knitters who are learning will inadvertantly hold their yarn too tightly when they throw for fear of dropping their needles.
