Yarn Baby

As long as it is soft?
Yes it's fine as long as the yarn is soft, mashine washable, and does not have any loose fibers that can easily be pulled out.
If you don't know the baby personally, or it hasn't arrived yet then you may want to avoid wool just to be sure allergies won't be an issue.
One of the best tricks for giving a baby blanket is to keep the part of the yarn label with the washing directions and attatch it to a card. Give this card to the parents of the recipient so they can put it away. Eventually that blanket will need washed and the parents will be glad to have the instructions on hand instead of trying to remember what you told them or looking for your phone number to ask.
