How can I smudge/blend evenly?

(for 2B, 3B, and 6B pencils) right now I use either a makeup sponge or my finger...but neither smoothes the pencil marks so that they blend as evenly as possible. What techniques do you use?
I actually use those little white "stubbies" (as I like to call them) all the time, but I'm talking about for larger areas, like a whole page.

Back in my drawing classes in college we had these little smudge sticks (don't quite remember what they were called if not that). I think craft stores often carry them. They were basically paper things, rolled up with a point at one end.
