How could new medicines be found, researched, and harvested from the rain forest without harming it?

We talked about the rain forest and how a lot of medicines came from it in science class today. I was just wondering how they could be found, researched, and harvested without causing harm to the forest or the things living in it.

Scientists are able to conduct research in the Rainforest without harming it by reducing their impact while there. For instance, scientists obtain small plant samples, just as removing a few leaves from a tree--that certainly will not harm the tree.
