Skeins Fancy

I'm still a beginner knitter. (I can make rectangles!) I have made scarves and blankets. I knit a shawl with some son I gathered from different places. There are seven skeins total four different textures of yarn. I think I would make the lines between the length of the shawl, instead of width. Thus, the main question is: How do I several stitches cast on a good length (I'm old enough)? Some of the son is the wire ribbon, Fancy Fur, and some blends of wool. I think they go together well. All suggestions most welcome. (it sounds like a word problem of the mathematics classroom?;-D) Thanks in advance! I have no fixed size needle, but more likely on a larger size (I have different sizes, so it's very open to suggestion well). Thank you.
