Purple Mountains

I have been try to find this answer for a long time and I get some guesses but so far no real answer.
As you get closer to the mountain they usually have trees and a green tint to them or sometimes they are very rocky. The Sierra's look purple very often. I should also add that they don't look purple in all types of light, sometimes they look blue and then sometimes they look the true color (dark gray if rocky or dark green) I'm sure it has something to do with light refraction however no one seems to have the data.
Red (longer wavelengths) of light are scattered more effectively by dust in the air, it's called "atmospheric perspective".
