Ice Maxi

I have a 1989 Dodge van conversion maxi it's about 20 ft long with 4 captain chairs, bench/bed, and ice cooler with a space in the back. The tranny went out in it about 3 years ago and since it is my first vehicle and is a little rare to find I refuse to part with it and have actually decided to customize it. I figure this is a great opportunity to match a reliable tranny with a fuel efficient motor that can keep up with the weight of the van. So, what I am asking is do you have any opinions about what tranny/motor combo to put in it. It currently have a 318 in it that motor was getting bad mpg. Also if you know any sites on customizing vans that would be great. I guess I am too cheap to just buy a motor home and want something to go traveling in with family/friends for vacations etc. Thanks for you're answers I know it's not an easy question to answers but any help would be much appreciated.

you,ll get better mileage from a 360 in that van because it will pull the weight of the van a lot easier than the 318 will,and they can be made to be fuel efficient if done right,use the 318 heads on them and you,ll be amazed at the difference it makes in the way they run on low end torque,and that's what your looking for is low end torque with good fuel mileage,i have done a few 5.9,s like that and they get better gas mileage than the 5,2,s do,good luck.
