How many stitches to cast on for a small female scarf using bulky yarn (5) and size 10 needles?

Hi! I'm trying to knit a simple female scarf, using the garter stitch on Lion Brand Homespun bulky yarn and size 10 needles. If I want to have just a small scarf, not too wide, how many stitches should i cast on? Because I tried 30 stitches earlier and for some reason as I keep on knitting, the scarf keeps getting wider and wider. How can I fix it or avoid it to happen? If someone know, please let me know as soon as possible, as this is a project I need to finish in a short period of time. Thank you so much, I really appreciate it!!

Your scarf is getting wider because you are picking up an additional stitch when you turn to the other side. Make a stitch in the stitch of the row you just completed, then finish the row and count the stitches and if the are correct, continue as you have been doing. The only way to fix it is to tear down the knitting until you get back to the right amount of stitches or start deleting stitches on both sides until you get to the amount you started with and continue in this manner and give her a wavy scarf. If you have bulky yarn and want a cast on number, fold the scarf you are now making where you have the 30 stitches to the width you want and;count the stitches and go from there.
