How do you go about dying hair from dyed black back to blonde?

Question from my son, who has dyed his hair "extreme" black and now fancies being near his natural colour again.
How do we go about it apart from just growing the black out, of course.

Obviously since you are questioning the method of doing this I assume that you are not willing to go to a salon since you are posting this or that would have already been done. I am a hairstylist so here are some at home directions to hopefully get him on the right track. First you shoud do a bleach wash. You'll find all the things you need at Sally's. Depending on thecondition of his hair would determine the level developer I would use. Here's the items you will need:

-1 packet of bleach (available $2.99-$4.99 @ Sally's)

-1 bottle of developer (30 vol. if his hair is in good condition if medium condition go with 20 vol.)

-Clarifying shampoo

-Reconstructive conditioner

mix one packet of bleach with 1 oz. developer, 1 oz. shampoo, tablespoon of conditioner and tablespoon of filtered water.

You should have a frothy-like consistency. Wear gloves and work the bleach wash mixture into the hair and scrub for no less than 20 mins and no more than 25 mins. Based on the results you get...if you have a dark orange color get a hair color within a level 3 or 4. (Sally's associates should be able to help pick out products in these levels & most hair colors have the levels. Ex: 4B = level 4 Brown, 3R = level 3 Red etc.) If the hair comes out medium orange go with a level 5 or 6 and if the hair comes out yellow/gold (unlikely the first time unless his hair has AMAZING lifting ablility) then go with a level 7 or 8. If it's not up to the desired level the first time I would suggest waiting AT LEAST 2-3 weeks to do it again and follow the undertone levels to pick out a new color each time depending on how much is lifted. Do deep conditioning treatments or use protein packets once a week while during this process to keep the hair from getting too damaged. I hope this helped in some way.
