I've got a form-fitting knit dress and I would like to add a long zipper down the back. If I cut the back open and sewed a zipper in, would the dress be functional or just a huge mess?
The only thing you could do without changing the balance of the dress would be an exposed zipper. You need extra fabric to turn under for sewing in a standard zipper -- "seam allowance".
Since it doesn't sound like you sew, take the dress to an experienced alterationist and ask what might be possible, considering how the dress is actually put together. Most of the zipper insertions I've seen from people who don't sew well have been pretty disastrous.
